The industry saves an amount of energy each year that is equivalent to what is consumed in households along the Wisconsin River from Wisconsin Dells to Rhinelander.

Conservation a Way of Life

In addition to using renewable energy sources, the paper industry’s conservation initiative is achieved in two more ways. One way is through large capital investments via more energy-efficient equipment used in wood and wastepaper preparation, pulping, paper manufacturing, finishing and converting operations.

Paper companies also integrate a conservation ethic throughout the manufacturing process, by monitoring energy use and searching for cost-effective ways to use less energy — from installing high-efficiency lighting to selecting the appropriate size for the many electric motors needed in a paper mill’s manufacturing and environmental protection operations.

The bottom line? Over a year, the energy savings equals all the energy used to heat and light the homes of Madison and Dane County, or those in the Wisconsin River Valley from Wisconsin Dells to Rhinelander.

That’s why it’s said that energy conservation is a "way of life" for papermakers.
